Born in Bethlehem in the land of Judah, in present-day Israel or Palestine, David was the youngest son of Jesse and was first known as a shepherd before being anointed by the prophet Samuel. He later became king of Israel and is remembered as one of the great figures of the Old Testament. Christian tradition honors him as psalmist, prophet, and ancestor of Christ, since many of the Psalms are linked to his name and his line leads to the Messiah. He is remembered for courage, repentance, worship, and deep trust in God, and is traditionally dated to around 1040–970 BC.
